Thermal Energetics of Tea

Hi Friends,

This came up in a class recently, and I thought it could be fun to share.

In Chinese Medicine all food (and herbs) have a thermal energetic. Substances can be cold, cool, neutral, warm, or hot - all producing different effects in the body.

If someone has a condition in the body that is generating a lot of heat, we want to use cool or cold foods (and herbs) to help clear the heat. On the other hand, if someone is dealing with a condition where they are very cold, we want to warm them up.

So if you are a tea drinker this can be fun to know:

Green tea is cooling. This makes it a great summer tea, or when dealing with heat issues.

Black tea is warming. It is a great winter tea, and can help warm up the body.

Pu-erh tea is even more warming. It is a fermented tea (and my personal favorite!). It also supports / strengthens digestion.

Love, Kelly
